Why Product Knowledge Matters
Commercial Video Production for Advance Auto Parts
Advance Auto Parts is one of the largest automotive aftermarket retailers in the United States, serving both professional mechanics and everyday drivers looking to maintain and repair their vehicles.
When the opportunity arose to produce commercial video content for Advance Auto Parts, the objective was straightforward: create high-quality visual content demonstrating automotive part installation in a way that felt credible to real customers.
Automotive audiences are quick to recognize when something looks wrong. If a product is installed incorrectly on screen, the credibility of the entire video disappears.
Because of that, the production needed to balance two things at once:
polished commercial visuals
technically accurate product installation
Enjoy New Media approached the project with a simple philosophy that shaped the entire shoot.
The best product videos come from teams that actually understand the product they’re filming.
The Challenge
Filming Real Automotive Product Installs
Automotive product demonstrations introduce a challenge that many commercial productions don’t face.
Accuracy matters.
Unlike lifestyle marketing videos, installation content must reflect real-world mechanical processes. The order of operations, the tools being used, and the way a part is oriented all need to be correct.
During filming there were moments where the talent instinctively reached for the wrong tool or began positioning a component incorrectly on the vehicle used for the demonstration.
For example, during one take a hub assembly was about to be installed backwards. Had that moment made it into the final video, the footage would have been unusable.
Even worse, if an incorrect installation had made it to the brand’s website or marketing channels, it could have quickly undermined the credibility of the content.
Catching and correcting those moments during production became just as important as camera movement or lighting.

Strategic Approach
Product Knowledge Meets Production Strategy
A key advantage on this project was familiarity with the environment and the product category itself.
Understanding how automotive components work allows a production team to guide what happens on camera, not just capture it.
That meant the director was able to step in during filming and ensure that installations were performed correctly, tools matched the task, and the visual demonstration remained believable for automotive audiences.
This type of awareness matters more than people realize.
When production teams understand the product they’re filming, they can:
prevent incorrect demonstrations
guide talent toward authentic actions
maintain credibility for technical audiences
For brands whose products require real-world expertise, that understanding can be the difference between content that looks good and content that actually works.
Execution
Filming Inside a Live Retail Environment
The production took place inside an operational Advance Auto Parts retail location.
Filming inside an active retail store introduces logistical constraints that are very different from studio environments. Customers were present, store operations continued during filming, and the lighting system installed in the building could not be turned off.
Retail lighting is often tied to centralized systems, and in this case the overhead lights remained on during the entire shoot.
Because of that, the production team had to design a lighting strategy capable of working alongside the existing store lighting rather than replacing it.
The first shoot revealed an important limitation. While the lighting package brought to set was powerful enough to illuminate the vehicle and product areas, it was not strong enough to fully overpower the store’s overhead lighting.
The footage remained usable and could be corrected during color grading, but it required additional work in post-production.
This discovery led to a strategic change for the second shoot.

Refining Production from Shoot One to Shoot Two
Returning for the second Advance Auto Parts shoot provided an opportunity to refine the production approach.
This time, the lighting package was upgraded with more powerful fixtures designed specifically to overpower the store’s existing lighting.
This adjustment allowed the team to:
control color temperature more effectively
eliminate unwanted color spill from overhead lights
produce a cleaner image directly in camera
Another improvement involved lens selection.
During the first shoot, anamorphic lenses were used for some segments. While anamorphic lenses create cinematic character and unique visual texture, they can also introduce softness that isn’t ideal for product-focused content.
For the second shoot, the production moved to spherical lenses that delivered sharper imagery and greater clarity for the automotive components being demonstrated.
For product videos, sharpness matters. The viewer needs to clearly see the part, the installation process, and the details of the product.
These refinements improved both production efficiency and the final visual clarity of the content.
What This Project Demonstrates About Commercial Video Production
This project highlights an important principle in commercial video production.
Technical products require technical understanding.
Production teams often focus on equipment, lighting, and camera systems. While those tools are important, understanding the product itself can be just as critical to the success of the final content.
When filmmakers understand the product category they are working in, they are better equipped to guide the shoot, catch potential errors, and maintain credibility with the intended audience.
For industries like automotive, tools, toys, and consumer hardware, that understanding can elevate the entire production.
Strategic Takeaways for Brands and Agencies
Several insights emerged from the Advance Auto Parts project.
First, product knowledge can dramatically improve production outcomes. Teams that understand the product they are filming are able to guide demonstrations and avoid costly mistakes.
Second, real-world production environments require flexibility. Filming inside an operational retail store meant solving lighting challenges and working around an active business environment.
Finally, production improves through iteration. The second shoot benefited from insights gained during the first, leading to stronger lighting control and sharper imagery.
For brands and agencies producing product-focused content, partnering with a production team that understands both storytelling and the product category itself can significantly strengthen the final result.
